We don’t expect drivers to have all necessary legal documents on them at the time of a prang. We aim to get you back behind the wheel as soon as possible. As long as you provide the necessary information within a reasonable timeframe, we can recover costs on your behalf. Should you not provide the necessary documents, however, the insurer may decline to pay the invoice, leaving you liable for the cost of hire.
Carbiz places you back in a vehicle similar to the one being repaired. Certain circumstances may limit the availability of Replacement Vehicles, like the age of your vehicle and accessibility of specific models. Prestige vehicles over 10 years old may not be eligible for a Prestige Replacement Vehicle and will fall under our standard range. At all times Carbiz reserves the right to choose the right vehicle suitable for your requirements.
The Replacement Vehicle is assigned to you for the duration of your car repairs. Should this take longer than originally estimated, a rental lease extension may be applied upon confirmation from the repairer. For this to happen, we may need your assistance in getting further information from the repairer.
You may be contacted by the at-fault driver’s insurance provider to ask you for information about your replacement vehicle. It is best to ask insurers to submit questions or comments in writing through email so you can have a record of your exchanges. They may even be the same as your own insurer. We recommend that you refer any queries to us as we are best placed to answer those questions. In these matters, when you do talk to insurance companies, be mindful that all conversations are recorded.
Big red flag. Occasionally, insurance companies or the other party will make you sign a release for the cost of your repairs. Under no circumstances should you consent to do this without independent advice. Please contact Carbiz immediately.
Please let us know immediately if you require other repairs on your vehicle that are not a result of your accident. We can only legally recover hire costs for the period of repairs that were a result of the accident. Where repairs are completed outside of the scope of the rental agreement, and you require extra days, you will be responsible for the cost of those days.
If your vehicle is deemed a total loss, please ensure that you inform us before accepting or rejecting an offer from an insurer. We have an amended offer format that ensures that the insurer does not try and bundle in the rental charges in that offer. This allows us to protect you from unnecessary fees attributed to you, including the costs of days we may be unable to claim due to that acceptance.
The Rental Agreement & Authority to Act outline your responsibilities and enables us to act on your behalf to recover the charges of the Replacement Vehicle from the at-fault driver’s insurance provider. You will receive these once we have lodged your application. You should read them carefully and speak to us about anything that you would like clarified before you sign them.
There is no minimum driver age with Carbiz. Our Replacement Vehicles are made available to provisional/full licence-holders (in English) who have signed the rental agreement. Learner drivers are not permitted to drive our cars. If an additional person wants to drive the Replacement Vehicle, they must be added to the rental agreement before getting behind the wheel. Any person who drives the Replacement Vehicle without doing this will be uninsured.
In the unfortunate event of an accident in our vehicle, be sure to contact Carbiz immediately. Drivers over 21 and on their full licence will be charged a $0 excess on Carbiz Replacement Vehicles provided the accident is reported within 24 hours. An excess of $2200 applies to under 21-year-old drivers and those not on their full licence or if you do not report the accident within 24 hours.

There are no up-front fees for the replacement vehicle itself, though we do require your credit card details in the event of fuel, tolls and fines that may be incurred. Under the terms of our agreement, you are contractually liable for the costs of the Replacement Vehicle, which Carbiz will seek to recover from the at-fault driver’s insurance provider on your behalf. To allow us to do so, your cooperation may be required.
Provided you are not at fault, fulfil your obligations and otherwise act in accordance with the terms and conditions of our agreement, we will not hold you liable for the Replacement Vehicle costs.
At all times, we attempt to confirm liability with the at-fault driver or their insurance provider. However, given that disputes are not uncommon, we rely heavily on your version of the accident. If you have witnesses, this will be of great support. Carbiz provides you with a replacement vehicle under the agreement that your statements are true. Should that not be the case, we are entitled to charge you under the terms of the rental agreement and the Authority to Act. It is strongly recommended that you read this carefully before signing the rental agreement. Please note that if your claim is found to be fraudulent, Carbiz will charge you immediately for all services rendered.
If your vehicle is registered for business purposes, you are required to pay the GST component of the hire cost at the end of the hire period, you are entitled to claim back the GST on your next BAS lodgment. Please provide your ABN in the space on the Rental Agreement & Authority to Act.
It’s not uncommon for not-at-fault drivers to experience delays with insurance companies or to receive unreasonable offers despite liability having been confirmed. As your Accident Assistant, we are experts in managing this process and are committed to representing your interests. In the event where an insurer fails to act in good faith, Carbiz will pursue legal action on your behalf. If this happens, you might have to give a statement. It’s important to remember that no matter the outcome, we’re here to make this process as pain-free as possible. You won’t be out of pocket a cent should your claim be escalated.
We will send you an email advising you that the at-fault driver’s insurance provider has paid the hire and that no liabilities are outstanding.
